Notes from Betty Spurlock Smithson:
In 1940 Census Uncle Bill (William H.) is still living next to Uncle Theo (Theodore) and Aunt Mayme in Pleasant Valley. Uncle Bill is married to Ercell by this time. Ercell is on line 14 which is a supplementary line that asks additional questions. From this we learn that she was a beauty operator and worked at a beauty shop in Globe. We also learn from the main body of the Census that she was born in Illinois. From the supplementary section we learn that her parents were both born in Illinois. From this supplement we learn that Ercell did not have a Social Security number. Only people listed on lines 14 and 29 were asked these supplementary questions.
My only memories of Uncle Bill are that he was the smallest of the Spurlock brothers and did not look like any of his brothers very much. He always came to the reunions and was quiet and very pleasant. I remember Ercell as very pretty and always happy and smiling.
