John Marion Spurlock
Notes from Cleatus A. Lewis file:
In 1920 John M. Spurlock, his wife Hope and daughter Sylvia were living in the Tres Pinos Township, San Benito County, California. This information is taken from the 1920 US Census of San Benito County ,California taken on January 16, 1920. This information can be found on Ancestry.com US Census Records for Tres Pinos Township, San Benito County, California, District #7, ED #38, Page 4A, Ancestry.com page 7 of 16 forTres Pinos Township. 1920 US Census of Tres Pinos Township, San Benito County, California. 88...88, line 9 Spurlock, John M............head...m...w...38...m.................TX...KY...KY Hope...............wife.....f.....w...26...m.................TX...TN...TN Sylvia..............dau.....f.....w......s..................CA...TX...CA Note: John M. Spurlock was renting. He was a foreman on a stock farm. The place of birth for the mother of Sylvia is listed as CA in the 1920 US Census and TX in the 1930 US Census. Her mother Hope gives TX as her place of birth. I believe the 1920 US Census has the wrong place of birth listed for Sylvia's mother. It should be TX instead of CA. In 1930 John M. Spurlock, his wife Hope and daughter Sylvia were living in the San Diego City Township, San Diego County, California. This information is taken from the 1930 US Census of San Diego County, California taken on April 7, 1930. This information can be found on Ancestry.com US Census Records for San Diego City Township, San Diego County, California, District #21, ED #37-78, Page 4A, Ancestry.com page 5 of 16 for San Diego City Township. 1930 US Census of San Diego City Township, San Diego County, California. 99...105, line 27 Spurlock, John M............head...m...w...42...m..................................TX...US...US Hope...............wife.....f.....w...38...m 18 at 1st marriage.....TX...TN...TN Sylvia..............dau.....f.....w......s....................................CA...TX...TX Note: John M. Spurlock owned property valued at $6,500. He was a Painter and Decorator Contractor. Sylvia's age was not given but based on the 1920 US Census she would have been about 2 years old. |
Notes from Betty Spurlock Smithson:
I have few memories of Uncle John and Aunt Hope. I do remember that Uncle John always came to the reunions and was a pleasant, easy going man who enjoyed being with family. He was very nice looking. He had a nice laugh and looked a lot like Daddy but even more like Uncle Theo. Uncle Theo was taller than either John or Daddy. He and Daddy were about the same size. I remember visiting their home in San Diego with Daddy when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Their home was lovely and cool. We sat in the living room and Daddy and Uncle John visited.
