Notes by Elizabeth Anna Spurlock Smithson:
Uncle Austin and Aunt Josie and their family were very close to ours. Uncle Austin was given to Aunt Allie to raise when he was a tiny baby because he and Bill were twins and since Bill was very tiny and weak and Austin was big and healthy grandma thought she would have a better chance of keeping Bill alive if she could concentrate on him. Aunt Allie had recently lost a baby about six weeks before. She was even able to nurse Austin as her milk came back in. Uncle Austin dearly loved both his mothers. He called Allie his Sister-Mother. It is a wonder to me that Grandma Spurlock could raise so many children, especially a little tiny baby as Bill was, under those primitive conditions.
Uncle Austin's book "The Spurlock Story" chronicles his entire life and is a treasure to all our family.
