Jessie's Letter to Theo
Theo and Fulton had moved to Pleasant Valley, Arizona in 1908 and were ranching and raising horses. (page 30 in The Spurlock Story by Uncle Austin) Jessie wanted to remind her big brother that her birthday was coming soon. Note that she was using stationary of the Treasurer of Hutchinson County. Jessie was probably at her father's office in the Hutchinson County courthouse where grandfather R. A. Spurlock was serving his second term as Judge ( p. 34). R.A. and Bet Spurlock and family were living in Plemons, Hutchinson County, Texas at this time. (1910)

Dear Brother. How are you------------------------------. I guess Tilla went to Allies last Saterday and I guess she will stay for a long time. Theo how are you getting along with your horse business. Is it very cold up there. It is surly cold at down here.
Theo did you know it is not long till I will be 10 years old. I am 10 years old the 6 of March.
And guess what reader I was in when I started to school and guess what book I am in now. I am not in no reader at all. But I will tell you what Book I am in. I am in the little geography and in the next to the smallest arithmetic. There is a girl going to school down here is the youngest in our class and knows more than any of us. She is just 8 years old and the best speller in the school and there is some going to school 20 to 15 and 14 and 13 and 12 and 11. and she turned the whole school down in spelling.
What do you think I am up with Bill and he is going on 14 years old and I am 10 years the 6 of March.
I don’t like this place at all. Bill said he was going to the old place next week and commence razing chickens. Ransom is already up at the old place and coming after Bill tomorrow. Well I must close this time for it is getting late.
