A NOTE FROM BETTY:
The best way to get to "Window on the Plains Museum" is to just google it. Those books don't show up in their gift shop but if someone wants the books they could contact them. Contact info in plain sight. The books they had for sale when I was there are: The Windswept Land and 100 Moore Years. God, Grass and Grit has a lot of Spurlock history. Panhandle Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) is an amazing museum in Canyon Texas. Again, easiest just to google it. That is where I got the old brands of R. A. Spurlock and other friends and relatives. They are the ones who produced that huge map that is too big to scan. That map is easy to find by googling Panhandle Map 1885. Click on 'more sizes' and enlarge to the biggest size and it is easily readable. They are evidently not for sale. Other fun things to google to get a taste of the colorful history of the Panhandle at that time:

The Windswept Land.
By Myrna Tryon Thomas This well written book contains history of our Spurlock, and Leverton ancestors and Foreman cousins as well as other friends and relatives. Also contains: well researched account of murder of Uncle John Leverton, interesting pre-history of the Panhandle area, etc. (This book may be available from Window on the Plains Museum in Dumas, Texas) |
100 Moore Years: History of Moore County, Texas.
Compiled by Moore Co. Centennial, Inc. Contains excellent history and documentation of our Spurlock and Leverton ancestors who were the first permanent settlers in Moore County. Report of Uncle John Leverton’s murder. Colorful description of the great blizzard of 1885 which killed over 400,000 head of cattle. Story of the panhandle drift fence built between late 1870 and early 1880’s. Good maps showing drift fence, earliest railroads, Martin’s and Evan’s Canyons, etc. (This book may be available from Window on the Plains Museum in Dumas, Texas) |
God, Grass and Grit Vol 1.
A History of the Sherman County trade area. Sponsored by Sherman County Historical Survey Committee. Vol. 1 contains good biography and picture of the David Drury Spurlock (brother of our ancestor Robert Archibald) family. Also contains: Excellent and colorful history of the Dick Pincham Ranch. This was submitted by our aunt, Mary Allie Lucretia Spurlock who married Dick Pincham and Austin Spurlock, brother of Allie and foster son of Dick and Allie. Note: The Pincham ranch was located on Palo Duro Creek which is located north of the Canadian River, not to be confused with Palo Duro Canyon which is located much further south. This book is rare and may be hard to find. It is found at the Family History Library and very likely local Panhandle libraries. It was published by Pioneer Book Publishers, Inc, P. O. Box 673, Hereford, Texas 79045. Spurlock/Leverton historians may contact me, Betty Spurlock Smithson, [email protected], and I will copy the pages you want. |
